On May 31st at 4:00 am, the Department was advised of a sighting of a bear in the area of Almeria and Niemann. The caller described the animal as larger than a cub but smaller than an adult bear with black fur. Officers checked the area and were unable to find a trace of an animal.
In the afternoon, a resident sent us a video they had taken near the Winters Middle School around 5:00 am. We can confirm after seeing that video, Winters was visited by a bear.
In addition to following the tips posted on the bear information site by the California Department of Fish and Game here are a few more reminders for residents:
Keep pets and pet food inside
Make sure dropped fruit from trees is picked up and disposed of
Make sure garbage cans are secured
If you see a bear do not approach and do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to appear as large as possible. If attacked, fight back.
If you see a bear, please call our dispatch at 530-795-4561 as soon as possible
