If you are not able to find the information that you are looking for, please call us at (530) 795-2261. Scam Alert! Scams use the phone, internet and mail to appeal to victim’s weaknesses: money and family. They often use trickery to make people feel guilty or to make them believe that they don’t have a choice. Because of the trickery, people are often reluctant to make police reports because they are ashamed. Often times, scammers will have collected information on your family before trying their scam. One of the more common scams is called the “distant relative.” This type of scam usually targets seniors. A caller will pose as the victim’s grandchild. Immediately when the victim answers the phone, they will be told that it’s a bad connection. The caller will talk very fast and will often say don’t you know who this is? Then the caller will act hurt until the victim makes an attempt to identify them. Once the caller gets the victim to say the name of their grandchild, they will tell the victim that they have been travelling. Then the caller will tell the victim that there has been a huge misunderstanding and that they have been arrested. A second person will get on the telephone and explain that he is a lawyer and that the victim needs to wire bail money to help their grandchild. If the victim attempts to ask questions or asks to speak to their grandchild the lawyer will tell them that there isn’t enough time and will explain how to wire the money through Western Union or another service or where to send a check. The victim will be instructed not to call anyone in their family because the grandchild is embarrassed and will explain everything when they get back. Once the money is gone, the victim will wait to hear from their grandchild. It may be several days before they check with their family. By then, it’s too late and the money is gone. You can prevent being scammed by demanding a phone number to verify the information, checking with the family first, or by looking up the name of the “jail” and verifying the information online. It is very important to check to see if the information is correct before sending any money. If you believe that you have been scammed, please contact the Police Department at (530) 795-4561 and make a report.
